Google – Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Friday, January 28th, 2011

These come directly from the Google Guru – Matt Cutts.

1. Think about what someone will type when they want to find your site.

Find out what your users are going to type then make sure those keywords are on your page. Its that easy.

2. Title tags matter.

It is the first thing a user sees when they are searching as Google also uses it as the title for the listing.

Don’t forget the description tag too. Often when users are searching the Title tag drags them in to read and the description makes them think this is exactly the page I am looking for and therefore click through to your page.

3. The more links to you the higher you will be indexed.

Don’t know how to get links in to your website? First try filling in your business in all the local directories like Google Places, Hot Frog, Yellow Pages, White Pages, True Local, Local, Startlocal, Aussielocal, there are hundreds of them and each link to you gets you a little bit higher in the Google indexing.

4. Get a WordPress Blog.
Starting a blog is a really good idea too. Make sure that the articles are interesting and you will get people linking to your stories. If the blog is onsite then the links in count as links into you. Google loves wordpress.

Editing meta links in side menu.

Monday, May 10th, 2010

WordPress installs 5 x Meta Links that sit at the bottom of the side menu. I wanted to delete 3 and I searched the Admin section for a place to turn them off easily. After a while I realised that it wasn’t something that I could do from the Dashboard.

I found the links hard coded into the html in the sidebar.php file (inside the template folder). By default you will find Register and Log in which you will need to keep for obvious reasons, but you can get rid of Valid XHTML, XFN and the WordPress links by simply selecting the code and deleting it:

Inserting Images into Posts

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Inserting an image into a post still seems to confuse a lot of people. I was confused myself.

There are 2 steps involved to inserting an image into a post. First, the image file must be uploaded onto your web server before it can be inserted into a post. The second step is to actually insert the image into the post in the appropriate location.

The simplest way to do this is to use the “Upload/Insert” (WordPress 2.7 and above) function on the POST screen (opposite the “Visual” and “HTML” tabs). Choose the appropriate button depending on whether you are adding photos, videos, audio, or miscellaneous media (e.g. PDF files). This method will complete both steps as outlined above.

In the “From Computer” area of the screen you need to upload the desired image file. NOTE: Before hitting the “Upload from Computer” button it is recommended that you select the “Browser Uploader” instead of using the default Flash Uploader. After selecting the “Browser Uploader”, hit the “Browse…” button and choose the desired image file on your computer. Then, hit the “Upload” button. Your image file is now on your web server.

Make sure you give the image an appropriate title, as well as a relevant description if desired. Choose the desired alignment and size, and hit the “insert into post” button. Your image is now inserted into the post at the location where your cursor was last active.

Every time you upload an image to your web server it is added to the “Gallery” of images that are available for that blog. If you want to insert the same image into another post go to the “Gallery”, hit the “Show” link, and then follow the same instructions to insert that image into another location or post.

Template complete

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

The new template is in to match the site look. All went smoothly so I dont really have any bugs yet to report. You can just use the Default template to save time and replace the HEADER, FOOTER and CSS to match your sites graphics. It seems to work well so far. I will get into it a lot deeper when I get some spare time to hack it all apart and learn more.
